Practice

Kelly Architects (KA) aims to provide functional and inspired design solutions.

Our story began as a rurally based practice, servicing primarily residential and educational clients in South West Victoria. We have since evolved to service a more diverse client base all over Victoria, with whom we take a creative approach; to solve their problems and designing buildings of which they, and their communities, can be proud. Our architecture has been described as promoting curiosity, imagination and wonder.

KA operates over a broad base, being able to advise upon, design and/or deliver multiple building types from major civic and community projects to residential extensions.  Key philosophies of the practice include building innovation, sustainability and longevity, particularly with regard to the use of available local building materials and features, and context and site specific responses in design.

We pursue solutions to the issues of our 21st century community.  Most pressing of these, is converting our consumeristic and fuel dependent lifestyles to a reality of sustainable living. Our buildings often comprise:

  • detailed site orientation to take advantage of prevailing winds and sun paths

  • extensive glazing to provide high levels of natural light

  • high use of thermal mass and insulation

  • passive solar ventilation and ceiling fans to reduce the need to operate air conditioners

  • locally sourced materials to minimum fuel consumption in manufacturing and transportation of building materials

  • integration of solar panels and rain water harvesting
